UIU Students Hold Fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break Trip
Fayette (January 17, 2006)Upper Iowa University students will host a Chili Supper/Cinnamon Roll fundraiser on Tuesday, January 24, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Fayette from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to help defray travel costs for this year’s Habitat for Humanity Spring Break trip to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
For the past seven years,
Upper Iowa
has been involved in the Collegiate Challenge Alternative Spring Break program and only UIU students who have been actively involved in community service throughout the academic year are allowed to attend. The cost of the trip is $1,000 per student, which they will pay out of their own pocket.
While in
Hawaii
, students will meet up with other participating colleges to build houses for Habitat for Humanity and stay with host families. During last year’s trip to
Charleston
,
South Carolina
, UIU students worked on numerous homes along side of students from the
University
of
Pittsburgh
and the
University
of
Virginia
.
“Next year we definitely plan to go to
New Orleans
,” said Daryl Grove, UIU Director of Student Activities. “It was actually on my list of places to go even before the Hurricane Katrina disaster.” Grove is an active promoter of giving students a productive and safe alternative from what are typical college spring break activities that involve partying and drinking.
The public is invited to attend. The cost of the meal is $5.00 per person and tickets can be purchased at the door.
