Upper Iowa University grad one of ten chosen to receive deaf education grant

Des Moines, Iowa (May 2, 2006) – Upper Iowa University graduate Kimberly Allen has been awarded the Mountain-Prairie Upgrade Partnership for Early Childhood Deaf Education (MPUP-EC) grant to help her pursue a master’s degree in special education.

Allen is one of ten recipients chosen to receive this grant, which is available to all educators in Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. The MPUP-EC grant is a federally-funded program that has been established to help alleviate the severe shortage of educators for children who are deaf.

Graduating summa cum laude from Upper Iowa University in December 2005, Allen applied for Iowa teaching licensure that same month. She was hired immediately by Des Moines Public Schools and is currently employed as a special education teacher at Brubaker Elementary School.
