Upper Iowa University debuts Master of Education program

Fayette, Iowa (March 31, 2006) — Upper Iowa University has announced a new Master of Education degree program at its Fayette campus. This program has been designed to meet Iowa’s demand for special education and reading teachers, as well as students’ demand for summer and evening courses at competitive prices. Classes begin June 12, 2006.

“Upper Iowa listened to the needs of Iowa educators when creating this program,” said Gail Moorman Behrens, EdD, Upper Iowa University’s director of teacher education and assistant professor of education. “Upper Iowa’s course schedule – time-compressed summer day courses and one-night-a-week courses during 8-week terms – allows students to keep their day job and build their degree portfolio.”

According to Iowa Department of Education data, Upper Iowa educates more teachers than any other private, higher education institution in eastern Iowa.

Iowans involved in non-school instruction will also find the program valuable.

“Instructional and classroom leadership skills are applicable to any field in which individuals need to develop and deliver goal-oriented and well-organized programs to diverse audiences,” said Ed Ogle, EdD, Senior Vice President of the Residential University. “Although Upper Iowa’s course names may sound relevant only to school teachers, the content delivered has high transferability to non-school contexts including business, government and non-profit programs.”
