UIU Sorority asks for partners as they provide fundraiser for Children’s Center

Fayette (January 26, 2006)—Upper Iowa University’s Phi Beta Delta sorority has accepted the challenge issued to the Fayette community by the Fayette Chamber Betterment Foundation (FCBF) to help raise money for Rainbowland Children’s Center in Fayette, Iowa .

According to Rainbowland director Sherry Suckow, they were recently ordered by state inspectors to replace the Graco “Pack ‘n Play” cribs they were using, due to a recall notice and for sanitation reasons.  Suckow said the cost of ordering eight new standard cribs will run approximately $1200, so they turned to the Fayette Chamber Betterment Foundation for help.

The FCBF, in turn, gave Rainbowland an initial donation of $200 and then issued a challenge to the community, stating they would match the next $500 raised.  “Rainbowland is great for our community; we need them,” states Deb Boike, Secretary of FCBF.  “We know they are working with limited funds and need the cribs to stay open so that is why we issued the challenge.  It’s community helping community.”

UIU’s Phi Beta Delta sorority members Ruby Olivarez and Tiffany Cavazos both have children at Rainbowland, so this fundraiser not only seemed like a good community service project but is personal.  The sorority’s goal is to raise a minimum of $150 from a student auction and through an appeal for donations from the University community.

Phi Beta Delta sorority has been a chapter on the Fayette campus since 1992.  Its mission statement is “Unity, to be recognized, to understand and learn from each other, to pass on traditions to those who follow and to branch out.”

FCBF is a reorganization of the original Fayette Chamber that now consists of local businesses in Fayette, as well as non-business residents.  Its objective is to increase awareness of Fayette and the surrounding communities and meets the first Thursday of the month at Boike’s Trailside Inn.
