Veterans fair at Upper Iowa University-Waterloo brings troops, services together

Waterloo, Iowa (May 26, 2006) –Veterans lined the halls at Upper Iowa University-Waterloo Wednesday to visit with representatives from Cedar Valley agencies about jobs, benefits, education and other services as part of Iowa Workforce Development’s (IWD) Veterans Fair.

Among the estimated 150 veterans were 54 Marines from Battery C, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Division, who returned in April from deployment in Iraq.  In addition to learning about educational opportunities afforded by co-sponsor Upper Iowa University, veterans obtained information from employment agencies, prospective employers, Social Security Administration, and Veterans Administration, just a few of the 43 exhibitors in attendance.

The most appreciated and well-attended parts of the fair were the presentations by the Cedar Rapids Vet Center satellite office, which assisted the veterans with filling out the application for health benefits. Vets crowded the classroom to fill out the VHA Form 10-10EZ, which is used primarily to apply for enrollment in the VA health care system, or for nursing home, domiciliary, or dental benefits.

“All of the veterans thought it was wonderful,” said Joan Koffler, a veterans career consultant for IWD.  “The location was terrific—it’s very difficult to find a place large enough and available during the day—and the veterans and exhibitors were all very happy with the event. This was a good partnership between Iowa Workforce Development and Upper Iowa University.”

Jeff Griffin, another veteran career consultant for IWD, said the event was a success because “veterans of all ages and background came and information was provided to these veterans about the benefits they may have overlooked at a prior stage of life or were unaware of.”   He added, “If just one vet walked away with information that helps them, then it was a success.”
